Information security is about more than technology; it is also about managing information assurance systems, including (but not limited to) working with professional staff, risk assessment, budgeting, and implementation of information programs.
Rather than studying technical aspects of information security, the UMD graduate program concentrates on the management competencies needed to implement and successfully secure and maintain an organization’s most precious commodity, its computer-based information.
The curriculum includes an overview course (ENRE 684) that assesses key trends and identifies important changes in computer security. Upon this foundation, the curriculum builds with courses on financial management, policy decision making and leadership skills necessary to effectively manage a work force devoted to protect an organization’s information systems in today’s ever-changing environment.
Graduates will have the critical cross-disciplinary foundation to manage information assurance systems. Programs content includes:
- Key issues of information security
Administration of information programs, services, and projects
- Leadership in developing mission, vision, and goals
- Effective managements for results
- Management of professionals
- Professional conduct and ethics
- Privacy & Security Issues
Faculty from the University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies, and the A. James Clark School of Engineering teach in the program.
The program provides an alternative to full-time study for professionals who want to stay current with the field and maintain a competitive edge by earning a post-baccalaureate certificate.
This is a management-focused program. No knowledge of computer programming needed!
