Graduate Certificate
The Graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Ecosystem Restoration provides a unique opportunity for early- and mid-career environmental professionals to gain a high quality graduate education in the principles of ecosystem restoration, applications of these principles to ecosystem restoration projects, and specialized hands-on field-oriented electives.
This certificate program is particularly relevant to the theory and
practice of the conservation, management and restoration of streams,
tidal and nontidal wetlands, submersed aquatic vegetation, and other
critical coastal and inland habitats.
The Ecosystem Restoration Program will provide students with the essential concepts and tools currently used in successful restoration ecology projects. The program curriculum was designed by expert faculty for environmental professionals who wish to upgrade or enhance their understanding of complex ecosystem restoration projects.
Graduates of the Ecosystem Restoration Program will be able to:
Assess the problems and potential of a disturbed system, determine how restoration should proceed, develop proposals for funding,
Present proposals and other reports orally and in written form
Supervise restoration efforts
Monitor the outcome
They will be able to utilize their skills through restoration work for federal and state government agencies, for consulting firms, and for non-profit and conservation and environmental organizations.

The Ecosystem Restoration Program draws upon the considerable expertise of faculty within the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) who teach within the Marine-Estuarine-Environmental Sciences (MEES) Graduate Program that is part of the College of Chemical and Life Sciences. Program faculty are engaged in active research and education through UMCES laboratories including the Horn Point Laboratory, the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory and the Appalachian Laboratory.
